My Story
I started sewing at age 7 (ask me about the funny story if we meet). Making things for myself naturally led me to design school, then years working with West Coast designers. I wanted to know every detail of the craft before launching De Novo.
Why outerwear? It’s the hardest to tailor and the most rewarding—because a great coat changes how you feel every time you step outside. The investment in perfecting each pattern, finding the right fabrics, and sweating every detail is how a piece becomes your staple. It's the final piece of every single outfit, it should be exceptional!
How do you have so many designs for a sole creator? Well, I won't say may age—but I have been designing with a focus on outerwear for over 20 years now. My pattern collection is extensive. You should see my half-baked idea collection—equally impressive 😉. The volumn of my collection speaks to my intention—timelessness. I build and keep. Designs stay relevant. One of my best sellers was developed about 25 years ago!
The Art in the Crafting of Outerwear
My design process is hands-on, meticulous, and always rooted in longevity.
- It starts with a vision. Sometimes it’s a sudden spark, other times it’s inspired by an amazing fabric or a need for a versatile staple.
- Prototyping and Iteration. I make and remake each pattern until the fit, drape, and seam lines are just right. Months can go into one silhouette.
- Premium Fabrics Only. I source from the best mills—especially Italy and Japan—and use both reliably reorderable core textiles and rare, leftover luxury fabrics for limited editions.
- Unique Embellishments. When inspiration strikes, I hand-sew, piece, and embellish for one-of-a-kind details.
- Small-Batch & Ethical: Everything is carefully constructed in the US—always by people paid fairly, and never rushed.
